Chiru decided on Congress?

chiranjeei1

It looks like Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi is inclining towards supporting the Congress, without Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, in the event of formation of a hung assembly.

During the political affairs committee meeting of the PRP on Tuesday, Chiranjeevi reportedly approved the suggestion that the party could extend conditional support to the Congress from outside, provided a BC would become the Chief Minister.

On Wednesday, he reaffirmed his thoughts. Referring to the demand within the Congress that a BC should become the next Chief Minister, Chiranjeevi said it was a welcome sign in the Congress party. “The social justice slogan of the PRP seems to have had its effect on the Congress, too. That is why, there is a demand for a BC chief minister in the party,” he said.

Kaun Banega Andhra ka CM?

chiru_cbn_ys_838496419
TIRUPATI: With the successful completion of the second phase of polling, and results to be declared on May 16, it is now time for the guessing game as to who will form the government, who will play the spoilsport and who will be the next Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

Interestingly, the three main contenders for the chief minister’s post contested elections from the Rayalaseema district. Incumbent Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy contested the Pulivendula Assembly segment in Kadapa district, which has been represented by him and his family for last three decades.

On the other hand, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo, who ruled the State as chief minister for nine years, contested the Kuppam Assembly segment in Chittoor district which he has been representing since 1989. In fact, Kuppam has been the TDP bastion since the inception of the party in 1983.

Meanwhile, popular actor and chief of the newly-emerged Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) Chiranjeevi contested the Tirupati Assembly segment which had the distinction of being the launch pad of another famous actor-turned-politician Nandamuri Tarakarama Rao in 1983.

The popularity of all the three contenders for the chief minister’s post is not in question, but what needs to be considered is how they are expected to fare in the 2009 Assembly elections. All the three are quite confident of their victory and claim that they are the next chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.

Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s victory looks to be a foregone conclusion, if the voting pattern is anything to go by.

His old rival, S V Sathish Reddy, is expected to repeat history. The poor performance of the TDP in Pulivendula can be attributed to two factors — absence of strong leadership coupled with insignificant base of the cadre and absolute dominance of the Rajasekhara Reddy family in the constituency.

In Kuppam, N Chandrababu Naidu is expected to win for the fifth time in a row, but lose the margin of votes, for two factors — the Congress being able to make considerable inroads into his domain and the delimitation factor which reduced the size of his constituency.

As for Chiranjeevi, who is contesting his maiden election from two places — Tirupati and Palacole, victory seems to be his if lady luck smiles upon him in Palacole where he is expected to win by a slight margin. If the efforts of Chiranjeevi in Tirupati, where he personally monitored the entire election process, pay off, he is sure to win.

Further, last-minute blunders of his opponent B Karunakar Reddy of the Congress like the intimidation drama at a private hotel where the PRP chief was staying, and continuous shadowing of Chiranjeevi on the polling day by Congress cadre and the Congress nominee himself, are expected to prove advantageous to the PRP chief.

Cong gains edge in second phase?

cong3

Going by the initial trends available from the constituencies that went to polls on Thursday, the ruling Congress seems to have gained clear edge over its rivals.

According to reports reaching the state headquarters, the Congress is likely to get not less than 35 assembly seats out of 56 seats in Rayalaseema; and at least another 40 seats out of 84 assembly seats in coastal Andhra in the second phase; which means, the Congress would get not less than 75 seats in the second phase. Assuming that it would get at least 50 seats in the first phase, the Congress is definitely going to emerge as the single largest party in the assembly.

If these predictions are true, the Congress would need only another 25 seats to form the government. And those who know the political maneuvering of Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, it is not difficult for him to mobilize the support of these 25 people.

sai_baba_puttaparthy_138377913

He cast his vote in the early hours and then left for Ooty to take rest. According to local people, Baba had never voted in his life, though his name is on the top of the voters’ list in that area. One does not know what made him change his mind this time.

Now, people are curious to know which party he might have voted in the elections. Most of the people are guessing that he might have voted for the Congress, since the TDP leaders had never treated him well in the past. If that is true, it would be a real blessing for the Congress!

Roja may lose votes for her loose talks

roja11240383445

TDP’s Roja may lose votes for her loose talks in Chandragiri

Roja’s seemingly never-ending personalized attack on health minister Aruna Kumari and her family seems to have caused an aversion among the electorate as the minister’s family has reputation in the region.

This has frittered away the advantage Roja enjoyed and has helped her opponent to regain strength. Besides, Aruna Kumari’s son and industrialist Galla Jayadev is undertaking some development work to woo voters for his mother.

Job-creation and empowerment of women and farmers are some of the initiative launched by Jayadev.

But Roja seems undeterred, “I had the edge and continue to have it. I shall win Chandragiri comfortably,” she told PTI.

Aruna Kumari, however, seems to be facing some internal trouble with a section of the Congress said to be working against her in a game of one-upmanship.

Chiru Kakinada Tour lashes out at Congress, Telugu Desam

chiru-kakinada
Kakinada: Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) president K. Chiranjeevi said the Congress and Telugu Desam parties have institutionalised corruption and the common people lived as ‘second-rate citizens’ during their regimes as their policies benefited only the affluent sections. Congress and TDP were the only parties that ruled the State since independence and when PRP emerged in response to the people’s desire for change, they were waging a malicious propaganda against it apparently due to fear of losing the ensuing electoral battle.

Addressing a public meeting here on Tuesday, Mr. Chiranjeevi said both Congress and TDP have looted the public exchequer in the name of development and welfare.

The farmers’ suicides speak volumes of their ineptitude in guaranteeing remunerative prices for their produce and providing quality inputs which could have increased yields.

Irrigation projects were launched with a massive financial outlay but their purpose was not served as huge sums were swindled by contractors and some leaders of Congress party.

A huge number of villages don’t have access to clean drinking water to this day and hundreds of poor people were dying due to avoidable diseases. Little attention was paid to augmenting the infrastructure in government hospitals while corporate hospitals minted money under Arogyasri scheme because of the government’s magnanimity.

The plight of farmers became miserable as fertile lands were usurped in the name of Special Economic Zones and the proposed coastal industrial corridor between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada would be compounding their woes. These projects had a profound impact on the fisher folks who were heavily dependent on the sea for their livelihood. The list of ‘atrocities’ committed by the two main parties (Congress and TDP) goes on.

Like no other party in India did so far, PRP nominated six persons belonging to Scheduled Tribes in unreserved constituencies.

The rival parties were raising a hue and cry having failed in keeping their own promises to give majority seats to BCs. Chiranjeevi said the doubts that persist on Kakinada Lok Sabha candidate Chalamalasetti Sunil’s credentials were due to the controversies created by his detractors.

Senior PRP leader Tammineni Sitaram, party candidates Chalamalasetti Sunil, K Kannababu, B Hari, Thota Trimurthulu, DRK Reddy and others were present.
