The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi and the Lok Satta party of former bureaucrat Jaiprakash Narayan got a major relief Friday following the Supreme Court fiat to the Election Commission to allot them common election symbols.

Chiranjeevi thanked the apex court for its order, directing the poll panel to allot ‘rail engine’ as the symbol for PRP.

‘We had full faith in judiciary and were sure of getting justice,’ Chiranjeevi told reporters while campaigning in West Goadavari district in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The Supreme Court Friday directed the Election Commission to accommodate the demand of three registered but unrecognised political parties, including Tamil star Vijaykanth’s DMDK, for common symbol in their states.

Chiranjeevi’s party had approached the court after the Election Commission rejected its demand to allot ‘rail engine’ as the common symbol on the ground that only recognised national and state-level parties were entitled to have a fixed and common symbol.

The court order has come as a major relief to PRP, which was worried about its performance in the absence of a common symbol.

Lok Satta president Jaiprakash Narayan hailed the Supreme Court order. ‘The (whistle) symbol signifies the awakening we are trying to create among people,’ he said.

The Praja Rajyam Party has decided to approach court to vacate the stay order on political roadshows in the State.

“In a democracy, it is the right of a political party to go to the people in different forms to explain to them their respective stand on various issues,” PRP spokesperson and party in-charge for district Sobha Nagi Reddy and senior leader Ganta Srinivasa Rao told reporters on Thursday.

Ms. Reddy said they were confident of expecting a favourable order. “If not, we will take the issue to the people’s court in some other form,” she said while stating that they had tremendous respect for the judiciary.

To a question, she said it was the responsibility of the government agencies to provide security at the roadshows. She said traffic regulation was the duty of the police.

On the allegation that fans of PRP president Chiranjeevi were not getting due importance in the party, she said nothing would be done without consulting the fans. After the review meeting held on Wednesday, it was decided to appoint a monitoring committee on implementation of party programmes.Ms. Reddy said that in four to five days, the district committees would be announced. The people were yearning for change and Mr. Chiranjeevi was all set to become the next Chief Minister, she said.
