VISAKHAPATNAM: Film star-turned-politician and founder of Praja Rajyam Chiranjeevi launched a broadside against Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu for calling him ‘inefficient and will not be able to run a Government’.
Roadshow

Speaking at a roadshow at Anakapalle, 40 km from here on Monday night, Mr. Chiranjeevi said he has been in the film industry as a top hero and No. 1. “Is it not efficiency?” he asked.

“On the other hand Mr. Naidu failed to be an opposition leader in the Assembly. When Chief Minister Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy told him to sit down, he could not do anything.

Mr. Naidu failed to prove the many corruption charges against Dr. Reddy”.

The Praja Rajyam leader said while Mr. Naidu is a retailer in corruption, the Chief Minister was a wholesale dealer.

Reacting to a reported statement by Mr. Naidu that Praja Rajyam had given tickets to upper caste candidates in the guise of BCs, Mr. Chiranjeevi challenged the TDP leader to prove the charge.

If the charge was proved, he would quit politics and if not Mr. Naidu must take sanyas from politics, he demanded.

Mr. Chiranjeeevi reached the Nehru Chowk in the jaggery town after 9 p.m. to canvass for his brother-in-law and an important figure in the party Allu Aravind, who is contesting for the Lok Sabha and Ganta Srinivasa Rao for the Anakapalle Assembly seat.

A woman supporter presented Mr. Chiranjeevi with a locomotive, party’s symbol, made of jaggery.

Another fan presented a pair of costly sunglasses. A large number of party supporters gathered to listen to Chiranjeevi.

The PR leader was stopped at several places as he came to Anakapalle from Elamanchili and had to conclude the day’s campaign in Anakapalle as the deadline approached.

Chiru’s Sircilla declaration draws flak

The Congress has ridiculed the Praja Rajyam’s Sircilla declaration stating that it had nothing new to offer to the distressed weavers of the textile town.

Taking a dig at the series of promises made by the PR president Chiranjeevi during his second phase of ‘Praja Ankita Yatra’ launched from Sircilla, the Textiles and Handlooms Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy, at a press conference here on Friday, derided Mr. Chiranjeevi’s promise of seven-hour free power for the powerlooms, reminding him that round-the-clock power supply was already in force. On the promise of setting up counselling centre for the weavers, she said a centre was already functioning along with a de-addiction centre.
‘Ignorant of facts’

She also noted that the PR chief was ignorant about what the Congress government had done so far for the weavers. “If he had gone through the government package, he would not have announced loan waiver for the weavers, which the present regime is implementing,” she pointed out. The PR leader also drew flak for announcing appointment of an IAS officer to study the problems faced by the weavers. She said the government, taking a serious view of the spate of suicides, had recently appointed a Deputy Collector-level officer to implement the special package for the weavers.

Stating that the Sircilla Declaration was nothing but duplication of the good work being done by the government, she advised Mr. Chiranjeevi to do his homework properly before pointing an accusing finger at the rival parties.

Chandrababu’s Fresh ‘Vennupotu’ To Balayya

The word ‘vennupotu’ is much popularized with Chandrababu Naidu and here is the latest update from TDP sources.

Balakrishna is not going to be the chief attraction in Yuvagarjana as the agenda of the event is subject to change with the interest of Chandrababau Naidu. Initially it was said that Balakrishna’s debut into politics is going to be the chief aspect in the Yuvagarjana but now it is going to be just one of the many things.

Chandrababu is going to be the main speaker from the dais while Balakrishna will come and announce that he has joined with TDP officially. There is no other scope for him to speak in extended minutes.

Chandrababu, it seems, shared with his party men that depending on Balakrishna may not be wise thing and as Jr NTR, a relatively better speaker, is also not available, it is reasonable to dilute the effect of Balakrishna. Naidu fears that Balakrishna may spoil the show by talking something irrelevant as he did in many of his recent film functions.

While Chiranjeevi was the solo speaker on Tirupathi dais on 26th August, here on Yuvagarjana there are going to be 12-15 speakers all together. Chance will be given for almost all the main party leaders from the categories of region, caste and position. The National Highway on which Nagarjuna University is situated is going to be decorated with 6 feet TDP flags for about 70 km. The road between Vijayawada and Chilakaluripeta will be the most happening one on 5th of November.

Chiru’s relative next mayor of Vijayawada!

In all likelihood, Prajarajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi’s distant relative M Ratna Bindu would become the Vijayawada city mayor as the Congress party’s nominee ahead of the next general election.

The incumbent mayor Mallika Begum will quit her job at the special meeting of the council on Saturday.

The two-year term of Mallika Begum came to an end on Friday and she has decided to honour the agreement reached before her election.

Begum would leave the council immediately after placing her resignation before the general body for its approval. The deputy mayor would preside for a shortwhile to make the council’s decision public and adjourn the meeting.

The State Election Commission (SEC) after getting the confirmation letter from the district collector would decide the date for the next meeting. Sources said that it would take another 15-20 days time for conducting the mayoral election.

Meanwhile, the local MP Rajagopal is reportedly lobbying with the chief minister Rajasekhara Reddy and PCC chief D Srinivas to prevent Ratna Bindu from occupying the chair. His contention is that Ratna Bindu might shift loyalties to Chiranjeevi just before the elections, which could jeopardize the interests of the Congress.

However, city legislators Vangaveeti Radhakrishna, Devineni Nehru and city Congress president P Sominaidu are all in favour of Ratna Bindu. She is a nephew of Allu Aravind, brother-in-law of Chiranjeevi.

Two years ago, the Congress nominated Mallika Begum to the post of mayor when the CPI’s Tadi Sakunthala resigned after completion of one year in the office. The CPI, CPM and Congress fought municipal elections jointly with an understanding that the left parties should share first two years leaving the remaining three years to the Congress.

Chiranjeevi’s statement lacks clarity

Praja Rajyam party chief Chiranjeevi’s statement on Friday that his party would not oppose if the Centre accorded statehood to the region lacked clarity, RTC chairman and Congress senior leader M Satyanarayana Rao has said.

Speaking with reporters here today, Rao said that the Congress high command had complete knowledge of the intricacies of the issue and would take steps to meet the aspirations of the people. About the apprehensions voiced on safety of Muslims, Rao said Muslims had their presence in many States.

Praja Rajyam to Support Statehood for Telangana

Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi declared on Friday that if the Centre came up with a proposal for creation of a separate Telangana State, his party would unconditionally support it.

Addressing an impressive gathering in this town, he recalled that at his first public meeting in Tirupati on August 26, he said he would abide by people’s wish on the issue of a separate Telangana. “I remember that the Telangana movement started from this very place in 1969. I know how important it is to you,” he said.

Mr. Chiranjeevi said: “If you so wish, make sure that your voice is heard by the powers that be. The only way you can make your voice heard by the Centre is by electing the right people, those whom you trust will do everything they can to improve your lot. You can trust the PR because the party was born out of the people’s wish.”

Ever since he announced the second leg of his ‘Praja Ankitha Yatra’ to cover three Telangana districts of Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam, he had said that political parties were eager to hear what he had to say on the issue. He asked people if they were backward, if the region lacked human and mineral resources and when they roared their response, he said, “Telangana is not backward. It has been pushed to backwardness.”

“Had the political parties shown a little interest in developing a backward region, your lives would have improved. Successive governments have taken you for a ride and used you politically. Do not allow yourselves to be cheated any more,” he said to thunderous applause.

For the first time since he launched PR, Mr. Chiranjeevi launched a direct attack on the Congress government. In an oblique reference to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, he reminded people that in alliance with a ‘regional party’, the ‘present government’ had come to power after promising Telangana. “Four years down the line, has anything like that happened? The only development was ‘more tears, weavers’ suicides, illiteracy, unemployment and more,” he said.

As the crowds screamed, ‘Jai Chiranjeevi’, the PR founder said ‘Jai Jagityala’ and ‘Jai Praja Rajyam’ before his convoy moved ahead towards Dharmapuri and Ramagundam.

Starting from Metpalli, he covered six Assembly constituencies.

Chiranjeevi Says Telangana Dreems and Issues

Chiranjeevi on Thursday hinted that his Praja Rajyam party would support the demand for separate statehood to the Telangana region.

Launching his ‘yatra’ in Telangana, Chiranjeevi said he would make an announcement on the issue before he winds up his visit to the region.

The actor launched the second phase of his state-wide ‘yatra’ from Sricilla town in Karimnagar district. Addressing a series of roadside meetings in the district, he hinted that he would back the demand for separate Telangana state.

‘The people of Nizam region (Telangana) love me so much. My films were all hit in this region and the people in the industry called me Nizam hero. After getting so much love and affection from you, I will not cheat you,’ he said.

Chiranjeevi said he knew the aspirations and feelings of the people.

‘I will honour your sentiments and self-respect on this issue.’

His assurance came at a time when almost all parties are supporting the demand for separate Telangana in view of the ensuing elections.

The main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) recently supported the five decades old demand while the ruling Congress party is likely to soon make an announcement in favour of separate Telangana.

Chiranjeevi’s meetings evoked massive public response like his meetings in north Telangana Andhra, which he covered under the first phase of the ‘yatra’ earlier this month.

In Sircilla town, the actor promised to help the weavers, who are facing a serious crisis. This was his second visit to the handloom town.

He promised seven hours free electricity to the powerlooms and said the would be brought under the cover of a free health insurance scheme.

Voicing concern over continuing suicides by the distressed weavers, Chiranjeevi said if his party took power, it would pay a compensation of Rs.500,000 to the family of any weaver who commits suicide.

No Opposition for Praja Rajyam Party in Coastal Andhra

The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) is hopeful of making a clean sweep of all Assembly constituencies in coastal Andhra Pradesh and it does not anticipate even a semblance of a fight from the ruling party, not to mention the seemingly unending woes of the TDP.

The PRP would make its mark in Telangana and Rayalaseema regions as well with social justice as the main election plank, said its leader K.S.R. Murthy.

Sensitive issue

Addressing mediapersons here on Thursday, Mr. Murthy said the Congress lost credibility and the TDP was not in a position to emerge unscathed from its problems. The PRP, he said, was trying to drive home the message that it was prepared to do its best for people’s welfare with service as the sole motto.

The PRP was planning ways to put an end to hardships of SCs, STs and Backward Classes, which were deprived of their rights for a long time.

Asked whether the PRP would prefer creation of separate Telangana, Mr. Murthy said party president Chiranjeevi would make a statement as it was a sensitive issue on which the party could not afford to take a hasty decision. The PRP was getting a good response in this region also contrary to perception that film stars would not be able to sway the electorate here, he asserted.

Dharna plan

Mr. Murthy said the PRP would picket East Godavari district Collector’s Office in a week if the government did not institute an inquiry into the corruption charges levelled by Small Scale Industries Minister Gollapalli Surya Rao against his cabinet colleague J.C. Diwakar Reddy, by the Lok Ayukta or a retired judge of the Supreme Court or Andhra Pradesh High Court. He said it was not a private matter to be deliberated in party forums as the Minister was accused of being involved in swindling of public money.

Many MLAs favoured an inquiry by a sitting judge knowing fully well that it was the least possible thing the government could do to ferret out such stark facts.

There were few instances when an inquiry was done by a sitting judge in India except the ones like Srikrishna Commission, which probed the Mumbai riots.

“It is unfortunate that similar charges traded by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu in the Assembly were never inquired into at the highest level,” Mr. Murthy added.

CPI to woo Praja Rajyam Party

With Praja Rajyam Party’s (PRP) founder Chiranjeevi attracting massive crowds in north Telangana region also, the CPI State committee is contemplating to dump the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and embrace the actor-turnedpolitician in its efforts to build an alternative to the Congress in the State. It wants to rope in the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in its alliance to infuse more strength into the new formation.

‘Left unity’ might be the first casualty, if the CPI national executive endorses the State committee’s preference since the CPM is showing more interest in Naidu than Chiranjeevi.

The extended State executive meeting of the CPI, which concluded here today, is learnt to have discussed how Chiranjeevi could be a better bet compared to Nadiu.

The CPI’s decision will be announced after the matter is discussed at the national executive to be held in Delhi on November 1 and 2.

According to sources, a majority of the district committees expressed their concern over the adverse affects in sailing with the TDP. Several leaders reportedly expressed reservations over the leadership of TDP president Chandrababu Naidu.

It is not as though there were no voices at the meeting in defence of Naidu.

‘‘Elections and electoral adjustments need to be finalised on the basis of the national level guidelines. Alliances with parties which haven’t spelt out their policies need to be discussed before taking a final decision. With the TDP playing an active role in national politics, we have to keep this in the mind before taking any decision at the State-level,’’ a State committee member of the CPM said, speaking his mind over the alleged decision of the CPI to sail with the PRP in the State.

Chiranjeevi Promises to Make Telangana Stand Clear Soon

The second leg of  Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi’s Praja Ankita Yatra started on Thursday, pulling massive crowds in Telangana district of Karimnagar though the mega star continued to remain as evasive as ever on the contentious Telangana issue.

The only promise the film actor made was that before he concluded his yatra in Telangana districts which will continue till November 7, he would make a categorical promise on the issue. He, however, said he honoured the sentiments of the people for separate Statehood.

The roadshows in all villages in Karimnagar district were well attended, which came as a relief to the managers of the actor who feared the turnout might not be all that impressive.

People in large numbers turned at his roadshows and listened to him attentively. They cheered him lustily whenever he spoke of the valour of Telangana people.

The film actor kick-started his yatra in the weavers’ town of Sircilla where he declared waiving of all loans availed by the weavers and clearing all piled up stock by paying Re 1 more per metre of cloth.

He also promised benefits like health and life insurance to weavers, appointment of a special officer, a training center to upgrade the skills of weavers, payment of Rs 2,500 as pension to the surviving family members of the weavers who committed suicides, education in the residential schools for the children, providing meal twice a day to the aged.

After reaching Vemulavada, he offered prayers to Lord Siva at Rajarajeswari temple and speaking at a whistlestop meeting, he promised steps to stop migrations of workers to other countries and announced that a special cell would be created for those who are working in the Gulf countries.

However his tour was marred by slogan-shouting by the cadres of Telangana Rashtra Samiti. At Sircilla, Vemulavada and Chandurti the TRS activists tried to corner him demanding a clear statement on Telangana. Chiranjeevi assured them that he knew the heart of the Telangana people and would do what they want.

While passing through Sircilla a hoarding set up by local leaders in which a child was requesting Chiranjeevi to provide free education to the children attracted the actor’s attention who later said he would definitely fulfil her wish. In another incident he called on a hundred-year-old woman to his vehicle and made her speak.
