PALACOLE (WEST GODAVARI DISTRICT): Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday trained guns on PRP president Chiranjeevi at an election rally in the coastal town where the latter is his party Assembly candidate. Dr. Reddy devoted most of his time to target the actor-turned leader in an apparent bid to counter his film glamour on his home turf. “Politics does not mean a two hour movie nor a couple of duets”, the Chief Minister heckled at Chiru’s debut in politics while describing his party as a “Cinemala party”. He sought to know as to why Mr. Chiranjeevi preferred Palacole, his in-laws place, by deserting his birthplace Narsapur, to fight the election. Saying that the PRP chief was fighting a lady candidate, Bangaru Usha Rani from the Congress, Dr. Reddy questioned, “Is it the kind of social justice Mr. Chiranjeevi harps on day in and day out”.
Dr. Reddy depicted himself as a saviour of the farmers from nature’s vagaries and rural distress. Recalling that the whole Godavari delta faced a serious threat of withering for want of adequate water in the Godavari in the rabi, he said the government had made strenuous efforts to save the standing crop by drawing water from Orissa and the other different sources.
“We have not allowed the standing crop on even in a single acre to wither away”, he asserted. He sought farmers’ support to his party on the planks of the modernisation of the Godavari delta and the Indira Sagar Project. He said the Grand Alliance was a ‘stumbling block’ to the irrigation projects, including the Indira Sagar in the coastal region.
Braving a sour throat, the Chief Minister hit the road in West Godavari district by addressing a slew of election meetings at Jangareddygudem, Koyyalagudem, Tanuku, Ganapavaram, Palacole, Bhimavaram, Denduluru and made a night halt at Eluru. The oppressive mid-summer heat seemingly failed to deter him from undertaking a marathon roadshow from Ganapavaram to Eluru.
