While all political parties feel let down by the High Court interim order banning all road shows, the police heaved a sigh of relief as they need not face traffic jams. The political parties estimate their strength basing on the turnout to their road shows. When the Telugu Desam and the Praja Raj-yam introduced film stars in the road shows, the Congress mainly depends on the only the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy. The court order mainly affects the PR party as its founder president Chiranjeevi conducted road shows in almost all districts except the coastal area.
His road show is due this month and next month. He is to embark on a tour to Prakasam and Nellore districts in the last week of this month and Krishna and Guntur districts in either the first week or second week of next month. Chiru’s fans and party activists were heavily banking on the tour. Now the court order has thrown cold water on their dreams. They feel that if the actor-turned politician’s visit is confined to one or two public meetings, people’s response can not be guaged.
The court orders also throw a spanner into the plans of the Telugu Desam at a time when the party leaders were busy in making arrangements for the next month Maha Dharna under the aegis of party president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu. The order has come as a rude shock to the district cadre. Doubts were expressed over film actor Balakrishna’s road shows which are scheduled next month.
Meanwhile, the decision of the High Court has come as bolt from the blue for the police department. The recent road shows by the union minister of state for human resources, Ms D. Purandhareswari and Kal-yan Ram of the Nandamuri clan created traffic jams. The citizens of Vijayawada faced untold inconvenience as thousands of vehicles de-scended on the city for Yuva Garjana of the Telugu De-sam. A boy from Machilipatnam died while being shifted to the hospital at Patamata as the police restricted the traffic due to Chief Minister’s visit. Now police feel that such kind of incidents will not recur due to the ban.
