Which way Chiru would go – TDP or Cong?

Now that it is more or less certain that megastar and Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi will not come to power, but would emerge as a deciding factor for the next government, the question that is doing rounds is which way he would go – the Congress or the Telugu Desam Party?

Normally, it is believed that the PRP has the backing of Kapus and they would never support the TDP, backed by their traditional rivals, Kammas. And since Kapus hitherto had been part of the Congress vote bank, they would prefer Chiranjeevi to support the Congress in the event of a hung Assembly.

There is a different argument by some other PRP leaders. According to them, the Left parties would play an important role in mediating between the TDP and the PRP. If the Congress does not get the majority, it amounts to people rejecting the YSR government and therefore, people would not appreciate a PRP-Congress nexus. Secondly, YSR has the capabilities of splitting the PRP strength, as he had done in the case of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. Compared to YSR, the TDP president is a safe bet, they say.

However, Chiranjeevi can consider supporting the Congress, provided YSR is not their chief ministerial candidate. Will that happen?

Chiranjeevi in an interview to a leading telugu TV channel revealed that he expected to get 95 to 105 seats in the second phase. When you add 75 seats expected in the first phase, Prajarajyam will get a minimum of 180 seats and a majority of seats in the assembly. The public displayed opposition to congress and lack of credibility to the claims of TDP. He did not reveal who he will support at Delhi and Hyd in a hung situation. He assured that he will go after looters of public money and currupt officials after assuming power. TDP leader Chandrababu expressed confidence that Mahakootami will get more than 200 seats. Chiranjeevi said Chandrababu is just creating hype as he did in 2004 and as happened in 2004 Chandrababu will get less seats in 2009 also.

Chiranjeevi To Contest From Tirupati

Posted by chiru On March - 27 - 2009

Actor-politician Chiranjeevi would be contesting from Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati assembly seat, politician Chiranjeevi would be contesting from Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati assembly seat, his Praja Rajya Party (PRP) announced on Friday while declaring the first list of candidates for the state assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
Unlike other parties, which declared their lists either in Delhi or Hyderabad, he chose Jaggampet in coastal Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district to announce the candidates for 100 assembly and nine Lok Sabha seats.

Chiru, as he is popularly known, declared the list at 9.27 a.m., the auspicious time set by his astrologers, after prayers and rituals on Telugu New Year’s Day Ugadi.

The party’s senior leader Hariram Joagaiah announced that Chiranjeevi would contest from the temple town of Tirupati, but it was not clear if he would also contest from two other constituencies in Andhra and Telangana regions like Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder and legendary actor N T Rama Rao.

He had earlier hinted that he might also contest from a constituency in his native West Godavari district in coastal Andhra and a third one in Nalgonda district in Telangana region.

Tirupati, where the famous Lord Venkateshwara temple is located, is considered auspicious by the politicians and NTR had contested from there after launching the TDP in 1982.

Chiranjeevi, 54, who floated the PRP in August last year, will face B Karunakar Reddy of the ruling Congress party and Sankar Reddy of the main opposition TDP.

The Congress’ M Venkatramana was elected from this seat in the 2004 elections but this time the party has fielded Karunakar Reddy, a close aide of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and former chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which runs the affairs of Tirumala temple.

Chiranjeevi declared that his brothers, actors Pavan Kalyan and Naga Babu, would not contest but his brother-in-law and party general secretary Allu Aravind would be a candidate.

He told reporters that the tickets were distributed in line with the party’s philosophy of social justice. The list of 100 assembly candidates includes 48 from the backward classes, 13 from Scheduled Castes and 27 candidates from other castes.

He said the party would come out with the second list by Friday evening. He had already announced that the party would field 100 candidates from backward classes for the 294-member state assembly.

Prominent in the first list of nine for the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state is former minister T Devender Goud, who will contest from the newly-created Malkangiri constituency

Goud had quit the TDP last year to float the Nava Telangana Party to fight for separate statehood to Telangana region but recently merged his party with the PRP.

The party has fielded Fatima Begum from the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, a stronghold of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.

The other Lok Sabha candidates are M Naga Rao (Adilabad-ST), V Rajender (Karimnagar), Shivakumar Lingayat (Zaheerabad), D T Nayak (Mahabubnagar), Rajmouli (Warangal-SC), M P Simhachalam (Araku-ST) and V Kalyani (Srikakulam).

Chiranjeevi announces power discount

Chiranjeevi, president

Praja Rajyam Party
, initially was against free sops to people from the government. But, he too started announcing various schemes to people that would be implemented if PRP happened to be voted to power. First, he announced that every poor family will receive rice, dal, oil etc for Rs 100/- a month. He then promised rural training institutes for providing rural employment opportunities. He also announced free education from Primary stage to PG. Chiranjeevi now announced that his party would supply domestic power at 50% discount to all villagers including landlords across the state if the PR was voted to power and the 50% subsidy will be borne by the government. He also promised that apart from continuing the free power to farmers, the facility will be extended to shops being run by artisans like weavers, goldsmiths, carpenters and barbers across the state including those who live in urban areas. Chiranjeevi said that his 50% tariff scheme would be beneficial to 1.75 crore households in the state. The PR chief did not clarify how he would offset the additional burden on the exchequer.

PRP looking for alliance with BSP

With the political situation in the State still fluid and the key player in the State’s politics, Telangana Rashtra Samiti not announcing its alliance partner, the Praja Rajyam Party has decided to adopt a wait and watch policy. The party leaders are of the opinion that till the TRS declares its stand on alliances the political situation would remain fluid. Even though the TRS is moving closely with the Telugu Desam and the Left parties, the PRP leaders were of the opinion that TRS may change its mind at any time. Meanwhile the PRP is searching for other available parties for an alliance in the State. They are looking at the Bahujana Samaj Party. Formal talks between the two party leaders may start this week, a highly placed source in the party told to The New Indian Express. In fact it was the BSP which has initiated the alliance proposal, the leader said. As the PRP president is presently touring the State, a discussion on alliance with BSP was not possible, he informed. Of course the PRP had already received the support from the Nava Telangana Pary, a formal announcement is needed by the presidents of the both parties. Though the NTP president Devender Goud did meet Chiranjeevi formally, they did not announce the alliance officially. The PRP is also contemplating alliance with Lok Satta Party but so far no formal discussion took place between the two party leaders. However, the PRP leaders are concentrating on the tour of its president. With the success of the tour in the Nellore and Prakasam districts, they heaved a sigh of relief and another successful tour would change the political equation in the State, in their favor, they hope. As the next tour would be in Godavari districts, which are supposed to be the citadels of the PRP, significant political developments would take place, they believe.

Chiranjeevi Joing National Party’s?

Posted by chiru On December - 15 - 2008

After the left parties decided to sail with the TDP the PRP has found itself in the lurch. Chiranjeevi and his party had hoped that they would be able to garner some votes with the help of the Left parties but thanks to CBN’s maneuvering abilities that is not to be happen.

Now PRP sees itself in a marginalized position and a stark reality that they would not be able to get to power in the state is biting them. The PRP now seems to be garnering some self respect and is trying to get closer to other regional parties so that they could create a voice of force in National Politics.

The Left had apparently decided to go with AIADMK in Tamil Nadu and that leaves the DMK as a potent ally.

It is believed that Chiranjeevi would meet the DMK supremo Karunanidhi in a few days to freeze an alliance. Recently he was seen cozying up to the Janta Dal leader Sharad Yadav also.

Prajarajyam Chief Chiranjeevi Plans Road Shows in Medak

Posted by chiru On December - 11 - 2008

chiru001
Prajarajyam president Chiranjeevi will be visiting Medak district again for three days beginning December 18, tentatively. However, the proposed visit on December 14 to Patancheru stands cancelled.

This was the decision taken by party leaders at Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Though a public meeting was planned on Sunday at Patancheru, the second thought was that Chiranjeevi should address public meetings in all the constituencies instead of limiting himself to one constituency.

According to party sources, the extraordinary performance of the Congress in the recently held elections in five States and the speculation that elections may be held earlier than scheduled forced the party to change plans and evolve strategy accordingly.

“We cannot afford to waste Chiranjeevi’s time by keeping him at the party headquarters. Even Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy addressing the media at New Delhi clarified that elections for Assembly will also be held along with those for Parliament. Time is running out,” said a party leader.

Chiranjeevi would address 10 public meetings, one in each constituency, in the district during his three-day tour. However, party leaders are taking all precautions to ensure that his visit would not attract the ire of the High Court, which banned road shows by political parties, responding to a petition filed a by voluntary organisation.

To check TRS

Medak district was intentionally chosen by the PR to put a check on the TRS. “We want to put a check on TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao, in his native district Medak, by drawing heavy crowds. This would give ample indication on where each party stands,” said the party leader. This would be Chiranjeevi’s second visit to the district after participating in the community launch at Singannagudem on December 6. “All precautions will be taken to see that the meetings will not inconvenience the public,” said PRP district co-convener P. Shiva Kumar.
