Mega star car chasing at Tirupati

chiru-car
The last hours of yesterday polling at Tirupati, where Mega Star locked in a sharp tussle with the former TTD chairman Karunakar Reddy, finished with thrilling car chases.

Congress candidate Karunakar Reddy came to a conclusion about his defeat at the very beginning, when PRP President Chiranjeevi announced Tirupati as his choice. He very well knows he is no matching to Mega Star and his Mega image. This is once again disclosed, when his followers staged dharna at the hotel where Chiranjeevi along with his family members are staying.

Karunakar Reddy and his followers disparately tried to obstruct the Mega Star from visiting the polling booths, fearing of his influence on voters. However, when Chiranjeevi visited Muthala reddy palle polling booth, both the contestants had a close encounter. They were seen arguing, away from the eyes of media cameras. Again, the same is repeated when they both met at Oriental College polling station. Women and youth are thrilled to see their favourite hero so closely, and tried to have shake hands with him. Karunakar Reddy who also present there, made protest and asked him to leave the place immediately, which Chiranjeevi obliged.

The thrilling car chasings of both the contestants witnessed by the people at the last hours of polling. Karunakar Reddy keep chasing the car of Mega Star till they both reached Jyothi theatre junction. Karunakar Reddy bumped his car into Chiranjeevi’s car and obstructed his way and tried to attack him. On the advice of PRP workers, Chiranjeevi remained inside his car, while both the party workers engaged in serious arguments. Police dispersed both groups and made way for Chiranjeevi to leave the place.

Verdict in Andhra will be good: Chiru

chiranjeevi-party
Amid a strong line-up of three chief minister hopefuls and two Union ministers, the surprise package in Andhra’s electoral battlefield is actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi.

Chiranjeevi, in the fray from Palacole in West Godavari district and Tirupati in Chittoor district, has emerged as one of the contenders for the state crown alongside the Congress’ YS Rajasekhar Reddy and Telugu Desam Party’s N Chandrababu Naidu.

CNN-IBN’s Veeraraghav spoke to Chiranjeevi on the polling day in Andhra. Excerpts from the interview:

CNN-IBN: Would you agree that this is the make or break phase for your party? Your stronghold is believed to be coastal Andhra Pradesh which is going to polls on Thursday.

Chiranjeevi: Yes, sure. I will make it.
CNN-IBN: You had gone to the lords of Tirumala on Wednesday to the Venkateswara temple. Do you believe you have the God’s blessings with you?

Chiranjeevi: 100 per cent. God’s blessings are there. We are going with a good ideology to serve the people and definitely his blessings will be there with us.

CNN-IBN: What is your one message as Andhra goes to polls in Phase II?

Chiranjeevi: Make your vote right. Everyone should come out and exercise his right. This is a very crucial time but you have to make your decision. It is also a challenge for the people. And finally it is nothing but about your future so for your better future please cast your vote.

CNN-IBN: There was a controversy on Wednesday outside your hotel room. Congress workers had come down saying that you were distributing money. What do you have to say about this allegation?

Chiranjeevi: It is a very silly allegation. They want to disturb… and divert the attention of the police and the people. This is all nonsense.

CNN-IBN: At this point in time, do you have any message for any political party? Maybe YSR Reddy?

Chiranjeevi: Today, I don’t think I will say anything. After 5 o’clock definitely I will speak. The verdict will be good.

Pawan Kalyan sees conspiracy

pawwan1
Pawan Kalyan, president of Yuva Rajyam, the youth wing of Praja Rajyam, sees a conspiracy behind the incidents which took place in Tirupati on Wednesday involving his elder brother and party president Chiranjeevi.

Speaking to the media here today he alleged that the police and the Congress had diverted the attention of the media and distributed money in Tirupati.

I cautioned about such gimmicks when I went there for campaigning. It is the last-ditch attempt by the Congress to stop Chiranjeevi from becoming successful,’’ Kalyan said and wanted the Congress to put a stop to such foolish acts.

He wondered why the police had not conducted searches in the houses of Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and Opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu. Though the Congress had targeted Chiranjeevi, the party would not fear, the YR president declared. The Congress was trying to tarnish the clean image of Chiranjeevi, he alleged.

Chiranjeevi flying to America to relax

chiru612388404741
The Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi, who braved the summer sun to sweat it out in the campaign trail, is planning to take a trip to the United States to get away from it all.

“The megastar, who has been on a whirlwind tour of the state to ensure his fledgling party’s victory in the polls, is desperately seeking a break,” said a source in the Praja Rajyam. It is learnt that Chiranjeevi has been invited for a holiday in the US by his close friend, Mr Kumar, an NRI business tycoon there.

The PR chief may fly to the US at the end of this month or in the first week of May. “His tour schedule is not yet finalised,” said an aide of the megastar. “It will be decided in a few days. He needs a break to rejuvenate himself as it is first time that he has taken such extensive tours across the state.”

Chiranjeevi’s actor brothers, Nagendra Babu and Pavan Kalyan, are also planning to stay aloof from politics for the time being and relax for a while with their families. Since polls are over, both the brothers will now get back to their films.

“I will resume my film shootings now,” said Pavan Kalyan. “Shooting for the movie Komaram Puli was stopped abruptly as I got busy with poll campaign all these days.”

Other senior Praja Rajyam leaders such as Mr T. Devender Goud, Mr T. Sitaram and Mr Bhuma Nagi Reddy are also planning to go on holidays with their families.

Mr Goud is planning to visit Australia and New Zealand along with his family to relax for a week. “I am tired because of the continuous campaign,” said Mr Goud. “So I am planning a foreign tour.”

The leader couple of the party, Mr Bhuma Nagi Reddy and Ms Sobha Nagi Reddy, have also decided to fly abroad with their children.

Over to Chiru in Andhra Pradesh?

16sld2
Telugu actor Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party— launched only a few months before the elections were announced— may well go on to

decide who will form the next government in AndhraPradesh.

The turnout was a high 68% in the second and final phase of elections held in 20 Lok Sabha and 140 assembly seats, following up on a similar performance in the first phase.

There were also talks about cross-voting — same person voting for different parties for the Lok Sabha and assembly elections. Many believe this will give Congress more seats in the Lok Sabha and lesser in the assembly. “It’s quite possible that now Chiranjeevi will decide who will become chief minister. But let us not take this as final and wait for the results,” said a Congress leader.

Praja Rajyam is likely to cut into the votes of Congress in a majority of constituencies. What seemed to have worked in favour of the newly created party was the ruckus created by Congress supporters on poll-eve in a five-star hotel in Tirupati where Chiranjeevi was staying with his family.

Congress activists alleged that Chiranjeevi had kept loads of money in the hotel to lure voters. “The incident portrayed Chiru as a victim and gained him sympathy,” said the Congress leader.

Congress and the N Chandrababu Naidu-led Grand Alliance are brimming with confidence about their chances in the second round, all the same.

Some political observers even warned of a surprise — the state may be headed for a hung assembly, something never seen before in this part of the world. The first phase of elections was held for 22 Lok Sabha and 154 assembly seats.

On Thursday, voters braved the scorching summer heat — in some places the temperature was over 44 degrees Celsius — to reach polling booths.

There were stray incidents of violence. A Congress worker was killed in clashes with Telugu Desam Party workers in Addanki assembly constituency in Prakasam district. Congress and TDP activists clashed in Kadapa and Chittoor districts.

Repolling was ordered in 24 polling booths in Kadapa, Anantapur, Ongole and Prakasam after miscreants damaged several electronic voting machines.

Over 60 percent polling marked in Andhra

vote
Over 60 percent of 26.6 million voters Thursday exercised their franchise in 20 Lok Sabha and 150 assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh as the second and final phase of polling ended amid incidents of violence in several areas.

More than 20 people were injured in clashes between activists of rival political parties while the police had to open fire at two places. This was in contrast to the first phase, which was by and large peaceful.

The polling, which began at 7 a.m., came to an end at 5 p.m. However, those who were standing in queues at polling booths were being allowed to cast their votes.

There were 254 candidates for Lok Sabha polls and 1,822 candidates for assembly elections.

The state’s chief electoral officer I.V. Subba Rao told reporters that re-polling would be held Saturday in 36 polling booths where electronic voting machines (EVMs) were damaged in clashes.

Activists of the ruling Congress party, the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and superstar Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) clashed at several places in Kadapa, Anantapur, Chittoor, Kurnool, Prakasam and Nellore districts, police said.

The second phase witnessed a keen triangular contest among the Congress, the four-party Grand Alliance led by the TDP and the PRP.

Most of the incidents of violence were reported from Kadapa, the home district of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Groups of Congress and TDP workers exchanged home-made bombs in Nagasanipalli in the Mydukur assembly constituency. The state police fired 30 rounds to disperse them.

Clashes were also reported from the Pulivendula constituency, from where the chief minister is seeking re-election.

The police also opened fire in Chinnaganjam in Prakasam district when Congress and TDP activists clashed.

Tension prevailed near a polling booth in the temple town of Tirupati in Chittoor district when Congress and TDP workers tried to prevent PRP chief Chiranjeevi from visiting the booth.

There was a near-stampede when the film star-turned-politician, who is contesting from the Tirupati assembly constituency, visited a few other polling centres.

Chiranjeevi is also contesting from Palakollu in his home district West Godavari. TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu is contesting again from Kuppam in his home district Chittoor.

In Anantapur district, people in a village attacked Congress candidate Prakash Reddy in the Rapthadu constituency. Villagers of Gadekunta did not allow him to enter the village. He was last week arrested by the Bangalore police in an attempt-to-murder case and was released on bail Monday.

Polling began at 7 a.m. in 30,446 polling stations in 10 districts in south coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. There were complaints from some polling booths about non-functioning of EVMs.

The PRP, which is making its electoral debut, appears to be strong in parts of the south coastal region, posing a challenge to both the Congress and the TDP. The caste factor is likely to play a dominant role with the Kapus, who constitute a sizeable chunk in East, West Godavari and Krishna districts, rallying behind Chiranjeevi.

Though there is no anti-incumbency, the PRP factor may cut into traditional votes of the Congress, while the TDP is looking to cash in on the division of votes.

The Congress and PRP are contesting all seats on their own while the TDP has left eight assembly seats for the two communist parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Lok Satta of bureaucrat-turned-politician Jaiprakash Narayan are also in the fray.

Central ministers Pallam Raju and Pannabaka Lakshmi, YSR’s son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy (all Congress), actor and former central minister U.V. Krishnam Raju (PRP) and actor Murali Mohan (TDP) are among the key contestants for Lok Sabha elections.

With Rayalaseema and parts of south coastal Andhra notorious for poll violence and electoral malpractices, election authorities had deployed over 60,000 policemen and paramilitary security personnel.

They also installed closed circuit television cameras in several sensitive polling booths in Kadapa, Anantapur and Guntur. Security was up in Tirupati after Wednesday’s incident in which police tried to search Chiranjeevi’s hotel room following the Congress allegation that he was distributing money among voters.

The police retreated after Chiranjeevi insisted that they conduct the search in the presence of mediapersons.

Following protest from the PRP, Subba Rao sent a top police official to Tirupati to monitor the polling and also removed a police officer from poll duty.

The first phase of polling was held in 22 Lok Sabha and 154 assembly constituencies in Telangana and north coastal Andhra regions April 16.

As many as 69.75 percent of 31.2 million voters cast their votes in the first phase.

Congress workers shadow Chiranjeevi: Praja Rajyam

chiranjeevi3
TIRUPATI: Congress workers, led by Tirupati Urban Development Authority chairman Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, on Thursday closely followed Praja Rajyam Party chief and contesting candidate for the Tirupati Assembly seat Chiranjeevi as he went round some of the polling stations to inspect the polling process, PRP sources said here.

Going by the unruly scenes created by Congress workers at the hotel where Chiranjeevi stayed with family yesterday, there was palpable tension as the actor-turned-politician, who was fighting his maiden electoral battle, set upon his visits.

A heavy guard of police personnel, led by Inspector General of Police V S K Kaumudi, was deployed across the town and all polling stations to ensure a free and fair poll on Thursday, officials said.

As he reached the polling station at M R Palle, Chiranjeevi came across his Congress rival Bhumana Karunakar Reddy, causing some anxious moments among workers on both sides, the PRP sources said.

However, nothing untoward happened as a strong posse of policemen kept guard.

Chiranjeevi then exchanged pleasantries with people waiting in queue to cast their votes and left.

The PRP sources claimed that Congress workers, however, tried to block Chiranjeevi when he went to the Byragipatteda polling station in the town but police intervened and cleared the way for the PRP chief.

Chiru learns aggressive politics

chiranjeei

The Wednesday’s incident of Congress workers attacking his hotel room has taught a big lesson to Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi.

He has realised that there is no point in being mild and timid in politics; and one needs to be aggressive to counter the opposition onslaught.

So, when he went round the polling stations in Tirupati on Thursday, he was at his aggressive best. Accompanied by his party leaders and workers, he straightaway entered the booths and argued with the rival party leaders. In one polling booth, he had a face to face encounter with Congress candidate B Karunakar Reddy and he put up an aggressive posture, notwithstanding the slogan shouting by the Congress workers.

He knows that his presence in the polling stations would make some difference, as there was near stampede in all the places to have a close look at the hero. Hereafter, the PRP president will play “rough” with his rivals, as he does in films!
