Air India plane which arrived from Dubai crashed when coming in to land at Mangalore airport

It happened today at 6:00am

It was carrying 163 passengers and nine crew members when it crashed outside the city of Mangalore.

“At least 160 passengers have died in the crash,” V.S. Acharya, home minister of the southern state of Karnataka, told reporters.

Gorkha leader Madan Tamang, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL), was on Friday stabbed to death allegedly by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) supporters in this West Bengal town, police said. News of the death led to a spontaneous shutdown in the region.

Tamang, who led the anti-GJM front in the Darjeeling hills, was hit with a kukri (long knife used by Nepalis) at around 9.30am, an official said.

The Meteorological department has warned of six-foot high tidal waves.

On Tuesday, the spotlight was on the big Democratic primary in Pennsylvania where Rep. Joe Sestak took on Senator Arlen Specter who was seriously burnt by the voters’ anger. Arlen Specter who publicly supported Barack Obama and who had left the Republican Party to become democratic in April 2009 was squashed by Democratic Representative Joe Sestak, a retired admiral who is supported by the party’s left wing.

Democrat Mark Critz won PA-12, against Republican Tim Burns.

Cyclone ‘Laila’ in previous 18 hours which has brought huge rainfall to northern Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh.

Department have forecast it would cross the coast between Ongole and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh by Thursday.

It is feared that at the time of its landfall, the speed of gales would reach 115-125 kmph

Effects :

Four persons were killed in Pyapili mandal of Kurnool district when the roof of a temporary shed collapsed due to gusty winds. Three fishermen went missing after venturing out from their village, Arkatpalem in Muthukur mandal of Nellore district and eight more from Subbampeta hamlet near Vuppada mandal near Kakinada and all efforts to trace them proved futile due to highly rough seas. Two persons were struck dead by lightning in Keesargutta on the Hyderabad city outskirts.

Cyclone ‘Laila’ in previous 18 hours which has brought huge rainfall to northern Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh. It is expected to cross between Ongole and Visakhapatnam on Friday.

The cyclone Laila has intensified in the Bay of Bengal about 700 km south-east of Chennai and coastal areas of north Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are expected to witness heavy rains and very strong winds.

Cyclone Laila may bring heavy rainfall along the coast of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh states today, the Meteorological Department said in a statement.
