Pre-election promises being made by political leaders are taking voters into a world of illusions. While Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has promised to make all women lakhiers in the next five years, Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu is saying that he would straightaway give Rs 1 lakh cash to each poor family. The Chief Minister described Naidu as “pittala dora” making one fancy promise each day and asked the people not to believe him, Naidu appealed to voters not to fall prey to YSR’s attempt to purchase each vote at Rs 1,000.
And there is a third player in the scene – Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi. He is claiming that he would recover ill-gotten money of Rs 1 lakh crore from YSR and develop the state. The attacks, counter-attacks, allegations and counter-allegations have, thus, become banner stories in the dailies these days, creating a sort of hatred among the people towards political parties. Chiranjeevi’s meet the press on Sunday has become a lead story in all the three dailies. The focus, however, is on allegations of sale of tickets in PRP and the dubious role played by his brother-in-law Allu Aravind. Sakshi carried an allegation from Naidu against Chiranjeevi on this issue. Of course, Chiranjeevi would naturally deny the same, but the suspicion has remained among the people and party workers.
Andhra Jyothy did a follow-up on ex-IPS officer Anjaneya Reddy’s resignation from PRP. Reddy met Chiranjeevi and clarified his position and according to the report, he also made it clear to Chiranjeevi that the PRP would be restricted to third position after the elections. He refused to withdraw his resignation. Though it is an old issue, AJ’s banner on rebels influencing the victory chances of at least 30 MLA candidates of all the parties makes an interesting reading. On the other hand, Sakshi’s banner story is aimed at instigating the left parties against TDP, saying that it is a historic blunder to join hands with the TDP. The story came at a time when the Mahakootami is holding its first joint public meeting at Suryapet on Monday.
