The Congress party’s election manifesto in Andhra Pradesh has promised to enhance the quota of subsidised rice by 2 kg for each individual and assured power supply for nine hours daily to the agriculture sector.
The increase in the rice quota for each individual white card holder from four to six kg a month will place an annual burden of Rs. 4,000 crore on the exchequer in addition to the amount of Rs. 5,000 crore (excluding Central subsidy) already being incurred.
The 32-page party manifesto, which was released here on Monday by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and APCC president D. Srinivas, promised to continue the ongoing welfare and developmental programmes of the Congress government in a more focused manner. The flagship programmes such as Indiramma housing, Arogyasri health insurance scheme, three per cent interest for loans to SHGs and fee reimbursement to the students besides the massive irrigation schemes would continue.
Assurance on LPG price
Dr. Reddy said that the price of LPG gas cylinder would come down by Rs. 100 a cylinder once piped gas supply to the household became a reality in three or four years. On the contentious Telangana statehood issue, the party pledged to honour the stand taken by the government on the floor of the Assembly.
The government had already constituted a committee of members of both the Houses under the chairmanship of senior member K. Rosaiah, it pointed out.
On SC categorisation, the party promised to pursue with the Centre, the issue of enacting a law in Parliament. Referring to Jalayagnam, the party resolved to complete the incomplete projects in a time-bound manner. It also promised to recognise the growing aspirations of the people of Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Prakasam, Nellore and the four Rayalaseema districts for a fair share in Krishna waters.
Dr. Reddy sought another term based on the five-year-long Congress governance that he termed a “glorious period of the State.”
“We never believed in making promises like free colour televisions and cash transfer scheme that are impossible to be implemented,” he remarked. Mr. Srinivas said the party reiterated to continue its people-friendly programmes. He said Arogyasri was one programme that had given a new lease of life to many patients.
