The attempt by the actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi to prove that his filmi charisma can work in the Telangana region too seems to have not only misfired but also exposed his political immaturity.
Despite the euphoria created by his entry into politics after floating the Praja Rajyam party, the general feeling among various sections, especially among the political circles, has been that Chiranjeevi can succeed in swaying the voters in his party’s favour in the coastal belt only, particularly in the East and West Godavari districts. However, not withstanding his huge fan following all over the State, the general opinion is that his influencein the Telangana region would be minimal.
As a matter of fact, the Congress and Telugu Desam, which are bound to be affected more by the Praja Rajyam party than any other party, have been openly proclaiming that Chiranjeevi’s magic cannot work in the Telangana region which has 119 out of 294 Assembly seats.
There is no denial of the fact that the Telangana factor holds the key in deciding the political fortunes of various parties, which are now working out strategies as to how this emotive issue could be exploited for votes. And undoubtedly the TRS,which has been spearheading a political struggle for a separate Telangana state, wields a major influence in the region and can turn the tables in the battle for power. Though other splinter groups like the Nava Telangana Praja Party too are espousing the cause of Telangana, their influence cannot be matched with that of TRS.
Therefore, the TRS has suddenly become the most sought after party in the Telangana region for an electoral alliance as a run-up to the 2009 elections. The new-found importance it attained has even made the TRS to virtually dictate terms to other parties seeking an alliance with it by making itknown that a clear-cut stand on the issue was necessary for a tie-up.This, in fact, is intended to drive home a message to the Congress, TDP and the PRP that an alliance can be worked only if they spell out their firm commitment regarding statehood for Telangana.
All the three parties ‘Congress, TDP and PRP’ have expressed that they respect the sentiments of the people of the region but not have openly declared that they stand by the demand for a separate state. While the Congress and TDP seem to be not averse to a tie-up with the TRS, which they are fully aware was essential to come to power in the State, the PRP’s stance has been flip flop in this aspect. However, the party leadership has made it clear, atleast for the time being, that it would enter the poll battle on its own.
Thus in order to have its foothold in the Telangana region and also to pooh-pooh the claim of the Congress and the TDP that the Praja Rajyam cannot influence the people of the region, Chiranjeevi seems to have decided to take steps to make his party’s presence felt and woo the Telangana voters. As part of this strategy, Chiranjeevi organised two surprise road shows in Sircilla of Karimnagar district and Polepally in Mahbubnagar district.
In a typical cinematic script,Chiranjeevi visited Sircilla to personally interact with the kith and kin of the handloom weavers who had committed suicide. Likewise, he visited Polepally to hear the woes of the farmers whose lands were acquired by the government for SEZ. And at both the places, there was good turnout of the people which might have elated and thrilled the actor desiring to become the next Chief Minister. But he and his advisors seem to have conveniently failed to realize that the turnout was to have a glimpse of their reel hero. The actor put to use all his cinematic skills to attack the State government for miserably failing to come to the rescue of the weavers and also the SEZ-affected farmers. His emotion-filled dialogue delivery in targeting the government might have evoked cheers from the crowds, but seemed to have failed to realize the disappointment among the people for his failure to come out with some solution for their problems. He might be well versed in dialogue delivery, but he lacked the political acumen and administrative knowledge to spell out the needed solutions to resolve the issues.
Will his advisors atleast in future brief the actor-politician about his party’s policy to tackle such problems before he embarks on interacting with those confronted by various problems
