CLP: Chiranjeevi is ignorant about SEZ

Posted by chiru On September - 29 - 2008

The Congress Legislature Party said actor Chiranjeevi was ignorant about SEZs and levelling baseless allegations against the Congress government. The major industries minister, Dr J. Geetha Reddy, and the government chief whip, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, said Chiranjeevi visit to Polepally near Jadcherla was to gain political mileage by whipping up passions of the farmers who had given land for the SEZ.

“Most shocking is that he was accompanied by the former major industries minister, Mr K. Vidyadhara Rao, who was instrumental in land acquisition for the SEZ during TD rule,” she said. The TD government had brought the SEZ to Polepally from Khammam. Dr Geetha Reddy said Chiranjeevi did not know that the SEZ was framed by the Centre, and states have no role in it and expressed surprise that Chiranjeevi and Mr Vidyadhar Rao did not know this

3 more weavers commit suicide

Posted by chiru On September - 29 - 2008

Three more powerloom workers committed suicide in separate incidents at Sircilla on Saturday. In the last four days, the death toll because of suicides and alleged starvation have gone up to six. While C. Mallesham, 38, a powerloom worker from Shantinagar committed suicide by hanging, V Srinivas, 28, a dyeing unit worker, ended his life by consuming poison at his home.

Mallesham left behind his wife, two daughters and his aged parents. According to sources, nine powerloom workers have died because of various reasons after the Praja Rajyam chief, Chiranjeevi, visited the textile town. The third victim is yet to be identified. A villager said funeral processions have become order of the day in the labour colonies for the last couple of days.

He rued that at a time when the entire country is readying to celebrate Dasara and the women of Sircilla are preparing to observe the Batukamma festival to invoke the blessings of Gauramma, the village has nothing to do but to grieve the deaths of the powerless labourers. Notwithstanding the assertions of the ruling party leaders on the welfare of the weavers and the visits by the opposition party leaders to console the distressed workers, the poverty-stricken powerloom workers are treading the dangerous path of ending their lives by committing suicide

Alliances trouble Leftists

Posted by chiru On September - 29 - 2008

Differences have cropped up among the Left parties over the pre-poll alliances in the state. Even though the CPI state secretary, Mr K. Narayana, was in favour of formation of a Third Front under the leadership of the Praja Rajyam against the Congress and the Telugu Desam in the state, the CPI(M) did not agree as it wanted an alliance with the Telugu Desam.

Mr Narayana said that since both the Congress and the TD lost the confidence of the people, it was better to bring in another alternative. Meanwhile, the CPI state committee which met on Saturday in Hyderabad reportedly resolved to intensify its efforts for setting up a Third Front against the Congress and the TD with the Left, Chiranjeevi’s party and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti.

The party state leadership will send this resolution to its Central committee for its approval. This development could widen the gap between the two Left parties in the coming days, as the CPI(M) is reportedly not in a position to part ways with the TD as the Left and the UNPA-led by the TD at the national level are moving together.

The CPI (M) state leadership also points out that Chiranjeevi’s party lacks clarity on key issues like economic reforms and World Bank policies. “The PR still did not spell out its stand on the BJP. Our sole aim is to dislodge the Congress at the Centre and the state. We will align with the parties which can achieve that purpose,” the CPI(M) state committee leader, Mr Y. Venkateswara Rao told this newspaper.

The CPI(M) leaders opine that it is better to move with Mr Naidu than with a political novice like Chiranjeevi to defeat the Congress in the state. The CPI(M) state committee will also hold discussions on October 6 and 7 to frame its policy on alliances. The party national secretary Prakash Karat is attending the meet. “Our party central committee is going to meet on October 13 and 14 at Kolkata, where a clear decision will be announced,” Mr Venkateswara Rao said

Chiru’s Political immaturity exposed in Telanaga

Posted by chiru On September - 29 - 2008

The attempt by the actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi to prove that his filmi charisma can work in the Telangana region too seems to have not only misfired but also exposed his political immaturity.

Despite the euphoria created by his entry into politics after floating the Praja Rajyam party, the general feeling among various sections, especially among the political circles, has been that Chiranjeevi can succeed in swaying the voters in his party’s favour in the coastal belt only, particularly in the East and West Godavari districts. However, not withstanding his huge fan following all over the State, the general opinion is that his influencein the Telangana region would be minimal.

As a matter of fact, the Congress and Telugu Desam, which are bound to be affected more by the Praja Rajyam party than any other party, have been openly proclaiming that Chiranjeevi’s magic cannot work in the Telangana region which has 119 out of 294 Assembly seats.

There is no denial of the fact that the Telangana factor holds the key in deciding the political fortunes of various parties, which are now working out strategies as to how this emotive issue could be exploited for votes. And undoubtedly the TRS,which has been spearheading a political struggle for a separate Telangana state, wields a major influence in the region and can turn the tables in the battle for power. Though other splinter groups like the Nava Telangana Praja Party too are espousing the cause of Telangana, their influence cannot be matched with that of TRS.

Therefore, the TRS has suddenly become the most sought after party in the Telangana region for an electoral alliance as a run-up to the 2009 elections. The new-found importance it attained has even made the TRS to virtually dictate terms to other parties seeking an alliance with it by making itknown that a clear-cut stand on the issue was necessary for a tie-up.This, in fact, is intended to drive home a message to the Congress, TDP and the PRP that an alliance can be worked only if they spell out their firm commitment regarding statehood for Telangana.

All the three parties ‘Congress, TDP and PRP’ have expressed that they respect the sentiments of the people of the region but not have openly declared that they stand by the demand for a separate state. While the Congress and TDP seem to be not averse to a tie-up with the TRS, which they are fully aware was essential to come to power in the State, the PRP’s stance has been flip flop in this aspect. However, the party leadership has made it clear, atleast for the time being, that it would enter the poll battle on its own.

Thus in order to have its foothold in the Telangana region and also to pooh-pooh the claim of the Congress and the TDP that the Praja Rajyam cannot influence the people of the region, Chiranjeevi seems to have decided to take steps to make his party’s presence felt and woo the Telangana voters. As part of this strategy, Chiranjeevi organised two surprise road shows in Sircilla of Karimnagar district and Polepally in Mahbubnagar district.

In a typical cinematic script,Chiranjeevi visited Sircilla to personally interact with the kith and kin of the handloom weavers who had committed suicide. Likewise, he visited Polepally to hear the woes of the farmers whose lands were acquired by the government for SEZ. And at both the places, there was good turnout of the people which might have elated and thrilled the actor desiring to become the next Chief Minister. But he and his advisors seem to have conveniently failed to realize that the turnout was to have a glimpse of their reel hero. The actor put to use all his cinematic skills to attack the State government for miserably failing to come to the rescue of the weavers and also the SEZ-affected farmers. His emotion-filled dialogue delivery in targeting the government might have evoked cheers from the crowds, but seemed to have failed to realize the disappointment among the people for his failure to come out with some solution for their problems. He might be well versed in dialogue delivery, but he lacked the political acumen and administrative knowledge to spell out the needed solutions to resolve the issues.

Will his advisors atleast in future brief the actor-politician about his party’s policy to tackle such problems before he embarks on interacting with those confronted by various problems

Chiru likely to hit the roads next week

Posted by chiru On September - 29 - 2008

Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi is going to hit the roads. In all likelihood, the film actor will begin his mass contact programme any day between Oct 1 and 3.

Chiranjeevi’s tour raises the curtain on his headlong jump into the midst of the people. Till now, he has been making attempts to gauge the response of the people by making short and quick forays into their midst after announcing the formation of his party in Tirupati last month.

Though a novice to politics, the film actor is trying to identify with people – he made a surprise visit to Sircilla in Karimnagar and Polepally in Mahaboobnagar where he commiserated with farmers whose lands had been acquired by the Government for a song.

Though every one expected that Chiranjeevi would announce his yatra across the State soon after formation of his party, he reportedly kept postponing it due to logistic problem like those relating to the security concerns, crowd control, vehicles and so on.

At a meeting with his confidants, Chiranjeevi today gave the go head signal for his organisers to fix the itinerary.

He is likely to start his yatra from Srikakulam.

The actor is likely to ummask his tour programme tomorrow with details of where he would begin it and how he wants to go about interacting with the people. The actor will also spell out the details of tour plan which districts he preferred visiting first.

The actor’s proposed tour has already generated considerable interest not only in the political circles but also among the people of the State, since it would clear doubts about the Praja Rajyam Party’s strengths and weaknesses.

Chiranjeevi’s tour will be the fourth such mega exercise undertaken by politicians since 1983. Former chief minister and founder of the Telugu Desam Party NT Rama Rao set the trend by taking up a tour across the length and breadth of the State in his Praja Ratham to mobilise support from the people for the party he had just founded.

In 2003 YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who was then leader of the Congress Legislature Party, went on padayatra and was successful in turning the tables against the then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in 2004 elections.

Recently Telugu Desam president Chandrababu Naidu toured the State which he named ‘Meekosam’ for 117 days as a warm up exercise to the next general elections

Chiranjeevi faults SEZ policies

Posted by chiru On September - 29 - 2008

Visiting Polepalli in Mahbubnagar district, Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi on Friday launched an attack on previous governments for not considering the interests of farmers while establishing Special Economic Zones.

Expressing concern over the plight of farmers displaced by the Pharma SEZ here, he said that while SEZs are essential as they spawn industrial development, they should not be set up by depriving poor farmers of their land. As many as 56 out of the 250 SEZs in the country were in Andhra Pradesh, and it was regrettable that they were carved out of fertile lands owned by poor farmers. He said that lands of only the poor people had been taken for SEZs and not a single acre of any politician had been in the SEZ acquisition list.

Chiranjeevi spent over three hours in the area where the government had acquired about 1,000 acres in Polepalli, Mudireddipalle and Gundlagadda Thanda in Jadcherla mandal for the Pharma SEZ in 2001-02. Two companies are putting up their facility and only 153 acres is in use. He also visited the houses of three displaced families.

Little Ones are Big Players

these highly polarized political situations every vote and every seat got some value, this is the inside opinion of the major political parties in state ,even though they are boasting of getting more than 200 seats with huge margins in the coming elections in front of cameras.

Though congress too has made several appeals and attempts to cruise with other left groups and telengana parties all of them curtly kept it at bay. Now it is TDP that is craving for support of all smaller parties as it lost a lot of ground and even the cadre is in dispirited mood in these four years of its oppositional role. If the PRP has not emerged TDP ,certainly , could have mustered the support of all left groups and Telenagana parties with unison but the arrival of PRP onto political scene and CPI’ defiant to align with TDP like its conjoined twin CPI (M) has kept the public and political parties on tenterhooks in regard to alliances in the next elections.

Usually smaller parties run behind major ones and bargain some seats so that they can make their presence in the house but now major parties doings aerobics to win favor of smaller ones to come to power, seeing the changed climate with nimble mind the little ones too are demanding larger share.

It is heard TDP has to part with at least half of its total constituencies, if it wants support of the left groups and Telengana, even then has to say ‘yes’ as there is no way left and other opposition party PRP is waiting to say ‘yes’

Chiranjeevi to start ‘Mega Yatra

Posted by chiru On September - 29 - 2008

Megastar Chiranjeevi will embark on a state-wide tour Oct 6 to take his newly-floated Praja Rajyam party closer to the people.

He will start the much-awaited tour from Srikakulam district, the northeastern tip of Andhra Pradesh. After covering the coastal districts, the star will visit Telangana region in the second phase. The third phase will take him to Rayalseema region.

‘I will cover 50 km every day interacting with the people and explaining to them the policies of Praja Rajyam,’ he told a news conference here Sunday.

Chiranjeevi, who floated his party Aug 26, the birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, will be launching a week-long flag festival Oct 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. During the festival, the party flags will be hoisted in every village, town and city.

The party will also launch its membership drive on the same day. ‘I will give first membership to physically challenged Balakrishna Naidu and I will take the second membership,’ Chiranjeevi said. He had already announced the physically challenged youth would be the first member of the party.

The Praja Rajyam founder said the party would also plant 10 million trees all over the state during the flag festival. He asked all his fans and supporters to take part wholeheartedly in the plantation drive to increase the green cover and save the environment.

‘Each person becoming the member of the party will have to plant a sapling,’ he said.

The film actor, who recently visited Sircilla town to meet families of weavers who ended their lives during last few years, expressed deep shock over the suicide by three weavers in the town.

He announced financial help of Rs 25,000 to the families of five weavers who committed suicide during last few days. He said the government should take immediate steps to help the crisis-ridden weavers community.

Chiranjeevi, who said he entered politics after being inspired by former president A.P.J Abdul Kalam, criticized him for his support to the India-US nuclear deal.

‘He is a scientist and a statesman and he should not get involved in a political issue. Perhaps he has not carefully read the documents of the nuclear deal. It has a far reaching implications for the country,’ he said.

Chiranjeevi, who Friday visited Polepalli in Mahabunagar district to meet those displaced by pharma Special Economic Zone (SEZ), advised Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to visit Gujrat and see how the SEZs were being developed there without harming the interest of the farmers.

‘There should be no place for developing real estate in the SEZs. The land should be used only for the industrial activities,’ he said

Rose protest against Chiru’s critics

Members of Chiru Mahila Varadhi today conducted their protest against actresses turned politicians Rajasekhar, Jeevita, Roja and Vijayshanti for their “undue criticism” against Praja Rajyam President Chiranjeevi. At a stir held in Hyderabad today, the activists arranged roses in front of the four critics, besides distributed roses to the general public at busy junctions, seeking “good health to mentally deranged persons.” This kind of strange protest attracted the public in a big way.
